The Rosen Family -- short biographies

Frank & Lois Anne Rosen
Frank and Lois Anne met at a civil liberties rally in 1949 and were married that year. Lois Anne at the time was working for the Cook County Public Housing Authority. After Frank received his masters degree in Physics at UC, they left Hyde Park behind and their lives became an amalgam of politics and family.
Frank became a major leader in the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE), and was President of District 11 for 15 years.
Lois Anne was Executive Director of the Labor Coalition for Public Utilities (LCPU).
They participated in every major anti-war effort since 1950 and in both mayoral campaigns of Harold Washington -- Lois Anne was chosen by Harold for the city's Commission on Women. She tragically passed in 1996 and several years later Frank found another political soulmate in Bernice (Bunny) Selden.

Rachel Rosen DeGolia
Rachel Rosen DeGolia worked for the Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights for 15 years, serving as its Executive Director from 1977 to 1990. She has also served in various positions with the National Committee Against Repressive Legislation (NCARL). In 1992 Rachel moved on to work in the growing movement for universal health care with the Universal Health Care Action Network (UHCAN) headquartered in Cleveland, a national organizing and networking center for many grassroots coalitions around the country.

Rebecca Rosen Balanoff
Rebecca Rosen Balanoff has a two-state law practice with her husband, Jim Balanoff, concentrating on securing social security disability benefits for individuals from the U.S. government. They've worked intensively with political and educational groups in the Village of Oak Park to secure rights for workers and other low-income people and to increase funding for the schools. In both Illinois and Indiana they've provided support to activist organizations in dealing with legal issues arising from public political engagements.

Carl Rosen
Carl Rosen is President of the Western Region of the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE), a position he has held since 1994. He is responsible for drafting a civil liberties resolution adopted at every convention. Carl helped found and serves as an officer of Chicago Jobs with Justice and is a longtime activist with the 22nd Ward Independent Political Organization. Both bodies serve as forums to bridge the racial divides in Chicago while fighting for justice for working people.
