Alphawood Exhibitions: Ai Weiwei’s Trace
For the month of June, Alphawood Foundation Chicago will feature Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei’s Trace installation in its exhibition space. In Trace, Ai depicts prominent human rights advocates and political prisoners around the world in portraiture using exclusively Lego bricks.
Ai is famous for his citizens’ investigation of negligence by the Chinese government in the wake of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and for his corpus of provocative work challenging authority and conventional institutions in China and societies around the world. His most recent landmark work, the hybrid arthouse-documentary film Human Flow, captures the struggles of migrants and asylum seekers around the world, and the failure of governments to accommodate and provide adequate support for them.
The Alphawood exhibition marks the first time that Trace, previously exhibited in San Francisco on the island of Alcatraz, has visited Chicago. Tickets to the exhibition, which runs from now through June 30, for fixed viewing times must be reserved in advance. Walk-ins are not allowed. Tickets reserved within seven days of visit are free..
