Book Launch: Flint Taylor’s The Torture Machine

Join Haymarket Books for the launch of a historical treatment of policing abuses in Chicago by attorney and civil liberties defender Flint Taylor. The book, The Torture Machine: Racism and Police Violence in Chicago, provides an account of the horrific abuses perpetrated by Jon Burge and his associates through the eyes of one of Chicago’s fiercest police accountability crusaders. In particular, the book follows the uncovering and prosecution of Jon Burge’s acts of torture, and simultaneously paints a portrait of the ordinary Chicago citizens who were his victims.

The book’s release will be marked by three launch events at the following dates and venues:

  1. Chicago Teacher’s Union (1901 N. Carroll Ave.) on March 2, 2019, at 6 p.m.,
  2. Northwestern University’s Thorne Auditorium (375 E. Chicago Ave.) on March 4, 2019 at 6 p.m., and
  3. Seminary Co-op Bookstore (5751 S. Woodlawn Ave.) on March 7, 2019 at 6 p.m.

The events will take the form of a discussion with Flint Taylor, police reform advocates, and other figures central to the events detailed in the book.

You can learn more about these launch events at their Event page on Facebook here.
