Description: Dr. Michelle Alexander, NYT best-selling author of The New Jim Crow, will be this year’s Kent Lecturer. Michelle Alexander is a highly acclaimed civil rights lawyer, advocate, and legal scholar. She holds a joint appointment at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity and the Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University. Her bestselling book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness received the 2010 NAACP Image Award for “outstanding literary work of nonfiction.” In it, Alexander explores the dramatic trend toward mass incarceration of African American men, primarily through the War on Drugs, and challenges the assumption that the United States has “triumphed over race.”
