Bill of Rights Club: Episode 2

Posted on May 24, 2018

Episode 2 of the Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights’ podcast, Bill of Rights Club, is now live. In this series, we take the current events we cover on the site that we think deserve some more attention and explore them in detail. By taking a deep dive into major civil liberties developments, we try to illuminate the complex ways in which they impact our civil society, and what you can do to preserve your rights.

On Episode 2 of BORC, we dissect recent news on net neutrality, focusing on a Congressional Review Act vote in the US Senate, as well as a win for privacy in US border zones, which legally encompass most of the American population. Our guest is activist and Lucy Parsons Labs member Travis McDermott, discussing the organization’s work, which notably includes catalyzing the passage and enaction of an Illinois law limiting civil forfeiture practices in the state.

UPDATE: Since the recording of this episode, Representative Bobby Rush of Illinois’s First Congressional District has pledged his support for a Congressional Review Act resolution against the FCC’s “Restoring Internet Freedom” order which nullifies prior FCC net neutrality protections. The three other Democratic House members cited as not explicitly backing net neutrality legislation (namely a CRA resolution vote) who were listed in the episode, Representatives Kelly, Gutierrez, and Schneider, have still not publicly committed their support at this time.
