Mark C. Curran — May 25, 2012: “As Lake County sheriff, I support Senate Bill 1064, which would ensure any individual detained by the government is held in a facility that is public and directly accountable to the people.

The citizens of Illinois have long believed that detention is a job for government, not for-profit companies. In 1990, the Illinois Legislature passed the Private Correctional Facility Moratorium Act, declaring the management and operation of a correctional facility or institution to be inherently governmental.

Last year, the Illinois Legislature passed House Bill 2590, banning private county and municipal jails. The vote in favor of this bill was 115 to 0. Today, the Illinois Legislature has an opportunity to continue that legacy by preventing the privatization of civil detention centers such as the proposed civil detention center in Crete…………………………..”
