Durbin Criticizes Solitary Confinement Practices But Fails To Address Thomson
Posted on March 18, 2015
Earlier this month, US Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) expressed concern about the prison industry’s over-reliance on solitary confinement practices without specifically addressing the recent shocking reports of a new Federal Supermax Prison at Thomson in the coming years—a facility that’s projected to single-handedly double the number of people held in extreme isolation nationally.

What Effect Will Durbin’s Comments Have On The Thomson Facility?
Durbin’s comments to the media and demands for an audit of the Federal Bureau of Prison’s use of restrictive housing are welcome signs of progress but we still need his help to guarantee that the facility at Thomson will not increase the net number of prisoners held under these torturous terms.
