EARLY ALERT: People’s Hearing on Police Crimes July 21

There will be a Peoples Hearing on Police Crimes at Kennedy-King College, 6401 S. Halsted St., starting at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 21st.  The Hearing will take testimony from victims of police crimes and their families.  A campaign for a Chicago ordinance creating an elected Civilian Board of Control of the Police will be launched at the Hearing.  It is being convened by the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and the Criminal Justice Program at Kennedy-King College.

Mike Elliott, News Media Secretary of the CAARPR and a retired member of UAW Local 551, said, “the Peoples Hearing will not just be an event – it will be the start of a movement.  We will come out of the Hearing with a campaign to create and empower an elected Civilian Board of Control of the Police in Chicago.  We need to empower the people to make policy and discipline police officers found to have violated the civil rights of people.  This includes the power to fire officers and refer them for prosecution to an independent Special Prosecutor.”
