EVENT ALERT: Support Burge Torture Survivors 10/29/12

Peoples Law Office — October 16, 2012: “Today, the People’s Law Office and the Roderick MacArthur Justice Center filed a class action petition seeking justice on behalf of Burge torture survivors who remain incarcerated despite credible claims that their convictions are irreparably tainted because they were based in whole or in part on confessions elicited by torture and abuse by former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge and detectives serving under his command at Area 2 and 3 Police Headquarters.
The petition filed in the Criminal Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County requests that Chief Judge Paul Biebel grant evidentiary hearings so those who remain incarcerated may have a full and fair opportunity to present evidence supporting their torture allegations as well as the wealth of evidence amassed over the last twenty years demonstrating that Burge and detectives serving under his command systematically engaged in racially motivated torture and abuse during interrogations.
The petition notes that other jurisdictions faced with similar police scandals, including Los Angeles, New York City and West Virginia, have waived legal procedural barriers and vacated convictions to ensure no individual remain convicted on the basis of corrupt law enforcement actions. Now, that Burge has been convicted of crimes relating to the systematic torture of African-American people, the petition argues it is imperative that the Cook County criminal legal system abandon legal technicalities and provide each and every one of the torture victims a full and fair opportunity to present evidence that they were tortured.
Come to court and show your support for the Burge torture survivors who remain incarcerated. October 29, 2012, 9 a.m. Circuit Court of Cook County, 2600 S. California Room 101
