Stephen Rickerl — October 23, 2012: “The expiration of an agreement between state and union officials resulted in about 60 employees reporting for work Monday to an empty facility.
An agreement between the Department of Juvenile Justice and AFSCME allowed IYC Murphysboro employees to be bussed to IYC Harrisburg. But the agreement expired Sunday, and failed contract talks Thursday led to employees returning to IYC Murphysboro on Monday, which hasn’t housed a resident since July.
The last residents moved out of the 15-year-old Illinois Youth Center in Murphysboro as part of Gov. Pat Quinn’s planned closure of state facilities. In September, the Department of Juvenile Justice reached an agreement with AFSCME and began bussing the facility’s employees to IYC Harrisburg…………………………..”
